Arabia Museum is part of Helsinki Design Museum. It is located at the facilities of the old Arabia ceramic factory. There are exhibitions of both old and new ceramic art and ceramic industry.
The Boxes arrived in time to Helsinki… to be displayed at the glass cabinet of Arabia Art Department Society. With the kind support and help from the Finnish ceramic artist Kati Tuominen-Niittylä, there became a change in plans and our art pieces found their way to be exhibited at Arabia Museum.

Katie’s piece asks each curator to “add a small ‘souvenir’ of their city to one of the alcoves in the shrine, creating a narrative of its journey”. Here are the traces that have already been added… A shard from Belfast, pebbles and seashells from Bornholm, a monkey from London, a piece of film from Manchester and a daffodil from Cardiff.
Portable travelling shrine
“Inspired by portable shrines and amulet cases in the British Museum, this is a shrine to places Katie has never been; specifically the eight destination cities of ‘Fragile! In Transit’.
Drawing on themes of her previous work, Katie has explored the balance between her imagination and perception of a place versus the reality. Using gathered information from old postcards and guidebooks, she has visualised scenes from these eight cities.
As the shrine travels to the exhibitions each curator will add a small ‘souvenir’ of their city to one of the alcoves in the shrine, creating a narrative of its journey.”

The boxes should reach Helsinki, Finland, very soon now.
